Peppers from the Garden

News from the Centenary Creation Care Community Garden Team

The Community Garden Team is pleased to announce a partnership with the Fresh Stop Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at First Presbyterian Church, Lexington. In this CSA program, you contract with a farmer in Harrison County for a share or half-share of his harvest for 20 weeks (June 6 - October 17). A large variety of vegetables and fruits are planned for this season. Click here to see the veggie list.

There are several goals to this CSA program:

  • Provide CSA members with a weekly basket of fresh, local produce.
  • Provide fresh produce at a discounted price for families in need of nutrition assistance in the downtown community.
  • Encourage the farmer to farm in an organic and sustainable manner.
  • Reduce the farmer's dependence on tobacco as a cash crop.
  • Bring the farmer and the consumer closer together.

The weekly CSA basket would typically contain 8-12 different vegetables and fruits. A full share would provide for 3-5 people for a week; a half share would provide for 1-3 people for a week.

If there is enough participation in the CSA program from Centenary and some details can be worked out, you will be able to pick up your produce at Centenary on Sunday mornings, otherwise pickup would be at First Presbyterian on Sunday.

Commitments to the CSA program need to be made by March 15, 2010 so the farmer will know how much to plant. A full share is priced at $420, a half-share at $220. This can be paid in advance, or be spread over three or four payments. First payment would be due by June 1.

Applications and informational material will be available in the foyer on March 7 and 14. Click here to see the FAQ list.

The application form is available for on-line registration, or you may register with a hard-copy printed document (Adobe Acrobat format ... most computers are equipped to display and print this format).

Creation Care at CentenaryBringing Back the Hiking Trails at CUMC

Did you know we have a wonderful outdoor amphitheater, hiking trail, and picnic area all behind the Church? The outdoor amphitheater is being revitalized as an Eagle Scout project and the Creation Care Ministry Community Garden Team is working to bring back the hiking trail!

On Saturday, October 24,2009 volunteers gathered to trim trees, clear brush, mulch and line the walking paths. If you were not able to attend on the 24th, we still need your help. The path is about 2/3 of the way complete.
