Mercer's Musings

Current Series by Jerry Mercer

"The Third Heaven: Jesus and Paul"

A chronicle of the spiritual growth of a man who early persecuted Christians and later suffered for them.
[Details....]

A note from Jerry:

Recently I had a surgical procedure of a rather significant nature. I was informed that it would take from four to six weeks for recovery. However, it is obvious that it will take me a bit longer to get back "on my feet," so to speak, and finish out the series on St. Paul's spirituality. I have benefited much from our study and prayers. There are about four, perhaps 5, lessons to go in order to finish out. However, it will likely be early July before I can put myself back into this fruitful study. I regret this delay but as St. Paul said to the Philippians, "I have learned in all things to be content."

I am hoping by the end of August to present you with a wonderful study of the man who has influenced me most. His writings are few and difficult to find. But reading him is like finding a gold mine of the Spirit.

Thank you for your patience!

Dr. Jerry Mercer was the teacher of Centenary's Fidelis Sunday School class. During that period of service, he often gave permission to share some of his writings with the broader Internet audience. Although now retired as the Fidelis class teacher, he continues to provide studies for publication on these pages. These include:

  • 2 Cents - 105 columns that were provided biweekly over a 26 month period, in which Jerry shares one beliver's views on a number of current events.

  • Hearing the Good Book is a few words on listening to the Bible.

  • A Chosen Race is an article on the mysteries of vocation, election, and predestination.

  • Musings from Mark - 68 columns (plus introduction) in which Jerry digs into the Gospel of Mark.

  • Christology has been published with cross-referenced hyper-linked footnotes so you can easily jump from the text to a footnote, and then back to where you were. Many readers will find these 77 footnotes interesting and an essential part to the study of this article.

  • More Mercer Musings is a series of columns written in the winter of 2005/2006 before the spring thaw, including both devotional topics and musings on current events from a Christian perspective.

  • Life & Living highlights Christian values by intersecting an event or two in our lives with biblical teaching.

  • The Speaking God What separates God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, from other ancient deities? One prominent Old Testament scholar put it this way: God speaks to His people. This series, "The Speaking God" will explore biblical teaching on this grand subject and what it means for our Christian life.

NOTE: Christology is that part of Christian theology that studies and defines who Jesus Christ is. It is generally less concerned with the minor details of his life; rather it deals with who he was, and the major events of his life (his birth, death, and resurrection).

Important issues in Christology include:

  • was Jesus human, divine, or both
  • whether he actually performed miracles
  • whether he rose from the dead, and if so, whether his resurrection was of the body or strictly of the soul

Christology may also cover questions concerning the Trinity, and what if anything Christ accomplished for the rest of humanity.
