December 2, 2007: The Heavens Declare the Glory of God!
[Truth Seekers Home]
It has been said that while the heavens are declaring the Glory of God, many people are inside, channel checking! God wanted to make sure that we did not miss Him. He has put the evidence of how alive He is, not only inside of us, but also outside of us ... all over the earth and all over the heavens. Yet, sometimes, we miss Him.
Could We Know Jesus and Still Not Recognize Him?
Mary stood crying outside the tomb of Jesus. He asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" You would think she would have recognized His Voice. Jesus told us that His Sheep know His Voice. But she did not recognize Him. Why?
Sometimes in our distress over things of the world, we don't look up. Jesus had to ask her who she was looking for. Then when she formed the picture of Him in her mind and looked up, she recognized Him.
- Lesson #1: Don't let the things of the world distract you from looking up.
- Lesson #2: Know Who you are looking for!
I Can't Believe This!
Thomas was one of the disciples. He certainly was familiar with Jesus, but he said he would not believe He had arisen "unless I see the nail marks in His Hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His Side."
How far did Jesus go for Thomas to recognize Him? He did just what Thomas asked! He went on to tell him that He knew had believed because of what he saw. However, Jesus wanted Thomas to be at a higher level. He wanted him to believe, even when the physical evidence was not so prominent.
God will go to extreme lengths to get us to notice Him and recognize Him for Who He is, but our real goal is to be so focused on Him that we don't need those extreme lengths.
The Messages from the Universe
What do the heavens with the sun, moon and stars teach us about God? There is Light and Dark. There is a difference in Dark and Light. For every dark night physically or the dark night of the soul, there is a day that follows. For everything that is shadows in the night, there is always a day that follows where the sun illuminates the paths that were not so clear before.
The sun, moon and stars mark days, nights, and seasons. While God has many surprises in His Universe, He wanted us to know that some things are predictable. They will happen again and again without fail. God is dependable and trustworthy. Even in the midst of uncertainty, He is ever present.
Look Up Here! I've Got Something to Show You!
The universe is vast and unending, a true Reflection of God. Can you count the stars in the sky? When God gave Abraham the promise of a son, as well as many, many generations to follow, what example did God use to show Abraham?
Genesis 15:5 tells us that God took him outside. (I love that ... you can imagine it ... God jumping up from the supper table and saying, "Come out here. I want to show you something!") God told Abraham to look up in the heavens and count the stars ... if he even could. And then God told Abraham that his descendents would be that numerous! Wow! What an example!
Job is considered the oldest book in the Bible, probably older than even Genesis. When God was talking to Job about all the things for which He (God) was responsible, it is interesting that God included a description of the constellations He had made, calling them by name!
Who Named the Stars?
God! Names were and are very important to God. Psalm 147:4 tells us that He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name! Isn't that amazing? Each star is so important to God that He calls each one by name!
Sometimes we may feel we are getting lost among all the many people upon the earth, but we are never lost to God. Each one of us is precious and significant to Him. Isaiah 43:1 tells us that God has redeemed us and called us by name!
Just as God designed each of the celestial bodies in a different way, so He has designed us all to be alike and yet wonderfully different. Philippians 2:15 tells us to shine like the stars in the universe!
Satan Tries to get Us to Worship the Created Instead of the Creator!
Early in time, men learned that the stars had a predictable pattern. They learned that by looking to the stars, they could actually predict or interpret things on earth. God was giving lessons through the sun, moon and stars. God wanted us to notice Him and get the lessons from Him. The universe made a wonderful Power Point presentation!
However, satan had other things in mind. God creates such wonderful things that we just stand in awe of what God has created. It became imperative to satan to distract us from noticing all that Glory. So what tactic could satan use, if we did notice God's wonderful creation?
satan tried to get the people to worship the created instead of the Creator! That was satan's scheme from the beginning. Who created satan? God created him as an angel. However, satan wanted to be in the place of God. satan, as the created, wanted people to worship him instead of God, his Creator.
It was an easy leap for satan to try to get people to worship the sun, moon and stars. And he was successful with many, who made golden images of the sun and moon and called them gods.
Can The Stars Predict Our Future?
Many people believe they can. Some people would not think of beginning a day without checking their horoscope. What's the problem with using horoscopes to guide your life?
Some people read they should avoid certain things on certain days and miss a blessing of God. Some people read they are not a good match with their mate and they think they need to get a divorce. People who allow the horoscope to direct their lives have stopped depending upon God for direction and have turned themselves over to a false god.
How do people get hooked? They read something that turns out to be right some of the time and they begin to believe it will be right for all of the time. A horoscope only has to be right a small percentage of the time to entice people to follow its advice all the time.
The sun, moon and stars were created to give Glory to God. As such, they will always point to God. We can appreciate all that God has created, but it is God alone that we worship!
The Most Important Star in the Bible
God did and does use stars as sign posts that lead to Him. One of the most famous of these sign posts was the Star of Bethlehem that led the wise men to Jesus. Those who studied the skies in ancient times learned that when something happened in the heavens, it affected earth.
All the way back in the old testament, there were predictions of a star that would come from Jacob. Many years passed without its arrival. In fact, some who were looking died off without ever seeing it from their viewing spots on earth. But they passed the word to keep looking. And so there were those who continued expecting, even in the absence of evidence.
- Lesson #1: Keep looking and keep expecting.
- Lesson #2: Pass the Word to others to keep looking and keep expecting.
- Lesson #3: When the Word is fulfilled, follow it where it leads.
The magi, who saw the star, saw it because they were looking and expecting. Those who went before them had told them to look for it. They looked and they saw. They followed it. Their faith was rewarded. The star could never tell them anything about their present or future ... but it could do what it was created to do ... point the way to Jesus, Who knew all about their present and future!
What Do the Heavens Tell Us?
Look up! There is something greater up here than what you see down there. God will go to any lengths to get us to notice Him. He is putting sign posts all over the sky that say, "Look at Me!" And while He is calling the stars by name, He is also calling you by name. "(Your name), come here, have I got something to show you!"
